Kelly – MSR’s Mascot

MAINE SHELTIE RESCUE’S KELLY

On Sunday, April 3, 2022, the Maine Sheltie Rescue voted to make Furever Rescue, Miss Kelly Girl, the MSR Official Mascot!  Read her story below…

Maine Sheltie Rescue’s Official Mascot:Eleven  year old Tri, Kelly, came into MSR August, 2021, weighing in at 52 lbs.  During a vet visit at the end of February 2022, her very own birthday present was a weight loss of about 13lbs! And now (Nov 2022) she weighed in totalling at 29 lbs!  She was an enthusiastic participant in her weight loss program, which included regular walks and eating Senior Weight Management dog food, both wet and dry. We have moved her off the weight loss management diet. So hurrah for Kelly!! Kelly’s main difficulty is arthritis (probably due to years of being overweight!).. She does remain on a med to help her with the arthritis, plus a Cosequin supplement.

Kelly’s no longer limping. Her her walking is a little slow…but in recent months she has been walking with more alacrity.  When we call her with a treat in hand, she fairly dances to us. Most days on her walks she barks as she walks… a happy bark!!  Fortunately she has a low bark so we kinda enjoy it!  Her nic-name is Happy!

The other thing of interest for Kelly is that she has no teeth. When she came into rescue, her teeth were all bad. She had an angel donor who paid for her dental surgery where all her teeth were extracted, and she had sinus repair. She recovered very nicely from that surgery and has the nicest doggy smile, which she shares quite frequently, especially on her walks.  She has no problem eating her food and accepting treats. She loves munching on the snow. The snow probably feels good on her gums… When we manually give her a med or treat, her mouth is so soft and warm.

So much for the complicated part of Kelly’s life…

Kelly is the sweetest, most loving Sheltie. She is lovely with our other Shelties, showing signs of wanting to play.  Her deep bark sounds like a seal (A deep ork,ork ork!). She gives kisses (in fact she will lick you all over!!) and likes to be with her human.   She loves to be rubbed and scratched and will rest close to where we are sitting. She also nestles down into the big sleeping pillow with total abandon!  She loves her walks and LOVES rolling on moss in warm weather and in the snow in cold months…it is great fun to watch!!

The other amusing thing that Kelly does is that she sighs and moans as we fix her meals….as if to gently say, “Faster please!”  As I mentioned, her bark is non-irritating as it is so low. She barks if someone approaches the house and as we come in from errands. Kelly also barks with the other dogs as if to say, “Me too, me too! This is fun!  Keep it going!!” Kelly is interested in playing with our other dogs. When Manny, a 5-year-old Sheltie in her home, plays with his toys, Kelly encourages him. Kelly did have a brother dog befoe she came into Rescue.  I think they must have played.

We did look for a furever home for Kelly. We had two possibilities, but after nosing it around a bit, we realized Kelly had become part of our MSR family and needed to stay as our Furever Rescue. We, on the MSR Board, dearly love her, so we have made her our Official Maine Sheltie Rescue Mascot.
