Cassie’s story

CASSIE
JULY 31, 2024
Cassie, at 12 years old, came to Maine Sheltie Rescue back in January, barely weighing 10 pounds. Her loving foster home offered to keep her as a permanent foster as her health was so poor. There were times that we didn’t think she’d pull through since she wasn’t interested in eating. Chris, her foster Mom, would offer all kinds of different foods for her to try. Sometimes she’d only take a little nibble. Chris kept trying. Part of the problem was Cassie’s teeth were a mess, but she couldn’t get a dental until she put some weight back on.
Last month the good news came that Cassie was up to 17 pounds, so was able to have her dental! She had six teeth extracted and came through it beautifully. Here’s the latest photo of sweet Cassie. Love works wonders!

CASSIE and NICKIE, The Rest of the Story
January 1, 2024
Maine Sheltie Rescue was asked if we could help with a pair of bonded senior Shelties – Cassie, 12, and Nickie, 15. Their former owner had both health and memory issues.

Thankfully, we have a foster home who loves senior Shelties and said they’d be happy to take them!

Cassie and Nickie came our way January 2nd.  They are both so sweet, but are very thin and their teeth are an absolute mess!

Their foster mom was able to wash around their eyes with a warm washcloth which really made a difference. They have an upcoming appointment soon for a vet check and to schedule dentals. They will also need time to recover in their foster home.

We have sad news. Nickie, the sweet 15 year old, who was part of the bonded pair, has passed away. He was doing so well in his foster home, but then he went down hill. He was suffering. Sadly we had to let him go. His foster family is heartbroken. It was love at first sight for them. Cassie, Nickie’s side kick, and best friend, is being cradled and loved on. He had the best 16 days in their care.
Thank you to all those who  have donated to these special seniors. It’s greatly appreciated! Please know that Cassie is not out of the woods yet.  She is in need of much healing, as described, she is mourning Nickie’s loss and her appitite is down.  Please continue your support of this beautiful girl.
